Just ideas for now, but if I can actualize it artistically,
Life on one side, death on the other... I should probably switch the roses to lillies. What should represent life? I might try a bunch of birds flying... Life side is birds, happy clouds and sun/light.
Death side, lillies, skulls, and fire.

For some reason when I think of life-force I always think of vines, because they cover everything and they seem kind of invincible. I'm not sure how you could integrate it in your design if you liked the idea, though. Right now it might complement the thorny wood of the roses (which might be an interesting element to keep in the design even if you used lilies - vines versus thorns).
